Timmie hired me in 1974 as ta grad student and first certified woman athletic trainer for the newly formed Women’s varsity sports program. IBecause if her foresight, I became the 7th certified athletic trainer in South Carolina and the first woman certified athletic trainer in the state.
She set a high bar for her students, athletes and staff. Willing to investigate and research an issue and find an often creative solution for a problem or issue.
.Many of her former students and athletes would drop by to say hi to Ms. “T”. throughout the years. The last time I saw her was at a reunion of former athletes and she was thrilled by the turnout.
We exchanged Christmas cards thru the years and she always had a positive outlook. I’m sorry to just now hear if her passing . She was one the good ones!
Thanks for all you did for the “kids” , the USC community, the “goldens” , and for jump starting my career in athletic training and education.

My sincere condolences to "Coach T's" family. I was a member of the University of South Carolina volleyball team 1975-79 and Helen signed off on my scholarship. She believed in me at a time when a young female athlete needed that support. And, she was pivotal to our program's beginning and success. She was a pioneer and she persevered. I/we benefitted from her unwavering belief in our program. I have thought about her many times throughout the years with much appreciation. I will always remember her with gratitude.

Timmie and I shared the beginning years of my career at USC. She was a good friend and always available to students in her role as head of the activity program in the physical education department. The loss of her best friend Kathy Graham effected her a great deal. She loved USC and the Columbia area and only reluctantly left to be closer to family.I am so sorry to hear of her passing. Rest in peace Timmie.
