Betty Jean Rye

Obituary of Betty Jean Campbell Rye

Betty Jean Campbell Rye, 89, of Columbia passed away March 9, 2024. She was surrounded by her family as she went to heaven to be with her parents, beloved sisters, and niece. They all shared an incredible bond that most would never know. She was born January 9, 1935, in her family home in Eastover, SC.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Isabel Campbell and five siblings: Annie Mae Campbell, Mary Scanlon, Hazel Hendricks, Ethel Gilbert, and Lancey Campbell. She is survived by her daughter and son in law, Matt and Ginny Blackwell; three grandchildren that were the light of her life, Mary Kate, Matthew, and Calvin; and two brothers, James Campbell, and Raymond and his wife, Betty Campbell. She was a member of Greenlawn Baptist Church, Eastern Star and The Red Hatters.

Betty graduated from Lower Richland High School and attended Coker College. She worked as an administrator and retired from the ABC commission in 1998. After she retired, she loved helping raise her grandchildren, spending time with her family, friends and volunteering at her church. She had a carefree spirit and never met a stranger. Her love and strength will be dearly missed.

The family would like to express our thanks to Robyn and Franklyn at Fox Therapy. They were the best at what they do, and she always looked forward to their sessions. Also, to her family, friends and church members that were consistent with their visits and cards. She would get the biggest smile on her face when she received a card in the mail.

There will be a 3 PM graveside service on Friday, March 15, 2024, at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

If desired, friends may make a memorial to Greenlawn Baptist Church.
