Obituary of Allen Edward Stephens

Allen Edward Stephens of Cayce, SC, was called home to the Lord on January 25, 2024. He was the son of the late Allen G. and Elsie Ola Stephens and was born May 10, 1945 in Spartanburg County.

He is survived by step-daughters, Pat Grice, Terri Snelgrove (Wendell); step-son, Jerry Branham (Rhonda); and step-daughter-in-law, Michele White. He was also “Grandpa Hoot” to many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Allen was preceded in death by his loving wife Mable, and step- sons, Davy, Clyde, and Rick.

Allen, who was known to his family as “Hoot”, was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served in Vietnam. After his time in the Air Force was over, he went to work for the U.S. Army at Fort Jackson in the Finance and Accounting Office, from which he retired. He wasn’t quite ready to be idle, so he went to work at the Richland County Sheriff’s Department for several years. He enjoyed his time there and made many friends. He loved the Lord and was a member of Taylor Street Baptist Church of Cayce. He was a 32nd degree Master Mason, and a member of the Blythewood Lodge A. F. M.

Many people know that “Hoot” was a talented musician and songwriter. He copyrighted many of his songs, and was a member of both ASCAP and BMI. There’s no doubt he was happiest when he was picking and singing. He loved entertaining and was very good at it. The music and anecdotes he always shared will be missed by many.

A Celebration of Hoot's Life will be held at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, February 14, 2024 at the Gazebo at Woodridge Memorial Park, 138 Corley Mill Road, Lexington. Mable and Al were married on Valentines Day, 1979, so the family thinks it’s appropriate that they be reunited then.

Hoot was a very charitable person, donating regularly to many organizations including the VFW and St. Judes Children's Hospital. We ask that in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the charity of your choice.

And please, always remember Hoot's favorite parting words - “Peace and Love”.
