Bob Hartzog

Obituary of Bob Hartzog

Robert "Bob" Simpson Hartzog, 91, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Bishopville, SC, to Hal Leland Hartzog and Ruth Watkins.

Bob embarked on a life full of dedication and service. After graduating from Swansea High School, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy. Proudly serving as an engineer on destroyers and mine sweepers during the Korean War, he exemplified bravery and commitment.

Following his tenure in the Navy, Bob pursued his passion for engineering. He ventured into the merchant marines, navigating the Great Lakes while saving to further his education at the University of South Carolina. He graduated early with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, subsequently applying his expertise as an engineer at Allied Chemical in Irmo, SC. His innovative contributions in developing synthetic threading processes left an indelible mark, shaping industries for decades.

It was at Allied Chemical where Bob met the love of his life, Altha "Tina" Bostic. Together, they embarked on a journey of love, entrepreneurship, and nurturing hearts. Early in their marriage they established the Gingerbread House Nursery daycare and kindergarten, which they owned and operated with pride for over 30 years, profoundly impacting the lives of thousands of children.

Always an avid sportsman; active in hunting, bowhunting, fishing, and waterskiing, Bob's adoration for the outdoors was second only to the love he shared with Tina. For 57 years, their bond grew stronger, and together they lovingly raised four sons, who they cherished above all else. His legacy extends beyond immediate family, having cared for numerous neighborhood friends and others in need, all of whom became part of their extended family.

Throughout his life, Bob touched countless souls with his compassion, wisdom, and unwavering support in times of need. His innate ability to offer solace endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Tina Hartzog, and his children: Eugene Downs, Ronnie (Cathy) Downs, Robert (Kara) Hartzog, and Randall (Kelli) Hartzog. He leaves behind a cherished legacy in his five grandchildren, Leland Hartzog, Luke Hartzog, Britt Hartzog, Ronnie Downs, and Sara Downs, along with his sister, Harriett (Marion) Sadler. He was predeceased by his brothers, Sidney Hartzog and Hal Hartzog, Jr.

The family will gather to receive friends at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at the Mausoleum Chapel of Woodridge Memorial Park,138 Corley Mill Rd. Lexington SC 29072. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM, and he will be laid to rest with US Navy honors in Woodridge Memorial Park.
