Obituary of Charles Julian Mathis

Charles ?Chuck? Julian Mathis, 71, of Lexington, SC (formerly of Plymouth, Mass.) died on Dec. 2, 2012 after a long and brave battle with heart disease. Mr. Mathis was born in Valdosta, Ga. on Nov. 13, 1941. After graduating high school in Valdosta, he served in the U.S. Navy for 10 years, including two tours of duty on the nuclear aircraft carrier U.S.S. Enterprise during the Vietnam War. Following his service in the Navy, Mr. Mathis was employed by Boston Edison at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant in Plymouth, Mass., where he held many job titles including watch engineer, station manager and assistant to the vice president at Boston Edison. After retiring from Boston Edison, he held many consulting jobs, including Ocean Spray in Massachusetts, Con Edison in New York, and Shaw Group in North Carolina. Mr. Mathis attended night courses at Northeastern University and graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering technology. He was a devoted family man who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and golfing in his spare time. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Donna Mathis of Lexington, SC (formerly of Plymouth, Mass.), his son Gregory Mathis and daughter-in-law Alice Coyle of Plymouth, Mass.; and his daughter Kristian Sanda and son-in-law Joseph Sanda of Brockton, Mass. Mr. Mathis is the son of Willie Mae Robinson and the late Charles Robinson of Ocala, Fla.; and Mary Mathis and the late Henry Mathis Sr. of Valdosta, Ga.; brother of Charlotte McBurney of Alabama, Debbie Murry of Tennessee and the late Henry Mathis Jr. of Valdosta, Ga. Mr. Mathis is also survived by four grandchildren, Kira Hamilton of New Bedford, Mass., Danielle, Joseph Jr., and the late PJ Sanda of Brockton, Mass.; and one great grandchild, Paige Veronica Hamilton, of New Bedford, Mass. A private gathering for family and friends will be set for a later date in Plymouth, Mass.
