Obituary of Herbert Jefferson Browning

Herbert Jefferson Browning Columbia - Herbert Jefferson Browning, 84, of Columbia, South Carolina passed away January 18, 2018 at Agape Hospice House in Columbia. He was born on December 12, 1933 in Blytheville, Arkansas. He was the son of the late Herbert and Maggie Kirkland Browning. He graduated from Orlando High School in Orlando Florida and served in the U.S. Army. He was employed by F W Woolworth Company for 27 years and managed stores in Concord and Raleigh, North Carolina and at Dutch Square in Columbia. After attending Midlands Technical College and the University of South Carolina, he served as business manager at Washington Street United Methodist Church for a number of years. In prior years, he enjoyed golf, tennis, coaching baseball and he was always a Gamecock baseball fan. Herbert possessed a unique, dry sense of humor that will be missed by his friends and family. He attended St. Andrews Baptist Church and was a member of the Bible Expeditions Bible Study Group. Herbert is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Barbara Watts Browning; a granddaughter, Sarah Joyce-Davis of Maryville, Tennessee; two great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Shue; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Herbert Jefferson "Jeff" Browning, Jr.; a sister, Bettie Sue Davis; a brother, Percey Browning; and a half-brother, Guy Kicklighter. The family will receive friends at St. Andrews Baptist Church on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Salvation Army or St. Andrews Baptist Church. Woodridge Memorial Park and Funeral Home is assisting the family.
