Thelma's life began on August 29, 1918 on the family farm in Axton, VA. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson Green and Bessie Pearl Holland Green. She graduated from Brosville High School in 1935 and obtained her Bachelor's Degree from Averett College in Danville, VA. While in Danville, she met and married John Leon Paul on June1, 1938 and they experienced 65 years together until he passed in 2003. During her life she worked as secretary to the Vice President of Dan River Mills, was also the assistant to the manager of Danville Tax Office and had her own bookkeeping business. She and her husband owned Paul's Melody Shop and several other music stores in the area. Through this business they became promoters of musical entertainers. Thelma was one of the founders of Trinity Methodist Church in Danville in 1955. In 1969, she and her husband Leon went on vacation to Daytona Beach, FL. While there they purchased the Monticello Motel. They sold their home and businesses and moved to Daytona to begin another chapter in their lives. While there, Thelma was elected the president of The Motel Highway Association. Thelma retired after selling the motel and continued to live in Daytona until 4 years ago when she moved to Cayce, SC. She lived the last year of her life at Brookdale (Lexington Place), where she made many friends, liked getting her Monday manicure and playing Bingo. She was an avid reader and also enjoyed coin collecting, painting, photography and travel. Thelma also liked Elvis impersonators; however, anyone that was around her, for any length of time, would quickly learn that her real joy was cats. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brothers Corbin, Elbert and Athol Green; sisters Flora Green and Geneva G. Fuller; and nephew Ronnie Fuller. Mrs. Paul leaves behind, in addition to her daughter Joyce and son-in-law, Daucie, her nieces, Betty Glenn Fuller Rotty, Carolyn Fuller Saunders, Paula Cleveland Echols, Cindy Cleveland; nephews Rob, Bill (Leslie), Jim Cleveland, and Jessie Fuller. Through her daughter's marriage to Daucie she was blessed with an extended family and leaves behind her granddaughters; Angela M. Broadaway (Keith), Ashley M. Townsend (Nathan); grandson Alex Morrow (Amanda); great-granddaughter, Cara Broadaway; great-grandsons, Deven Broadaway and Preston Townsend. She also leaves behind her other daughter by another mother and father, Kim Matthews Harper (Walt). Donations in Thelma's memory may be made to the Lourie Center, where she enjoyed exercising and socializing. Thelma was an inspiration to many. She was an amazing lady, with a sense of humor right up to the last. Most of all, she was a fantastic person, awesome mother and mother-in-law! She will always be in our hearts!
