Obituary of Lt.Col. James Robert Cox

Col. Cox is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jane Stribling Cox. Two children: a daughter Leisa Cox Urban (Brian), and a son James R. (Jamey) Cox, III.(Bobbie) . Three grandchildren: granddaughters, Logan and Laney Urban and one grandson, James R. Cox, IV. He is also survived by a sister, Karen Cox Jackson and one brother, Larry G. Cox and a number of nieces and nephews. He was the son of James Robert Cox and Rachel Gaston Cox of Reidville. SC. Bob graduated from Newberry College where he was a member of ATO Fraternity. He also received his Master's Degree from Webster College, Pope AFB,NC. He retired from the AF in 2003 after 29 years of service. He was a C-130 pilot and flew the C-130 Gunship in Vietnam. He received the following Medals: Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters,. Defense Meritorious Service Medal with 2 Oak Leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal with 1 Oak Leaf cluster, Air Force Short Tour Ribbon, Armed Forces Service Medal, Air Force Training Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Oak Leaf cluster,Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with 1 Oak Leaf cluster, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Force Organizational Excellence Award, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Air Force Outstanding with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award w/valor with 4 Oak Leaf clusters. Air Force Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of Cypress Presbyterian Church, Cameron, N.C. where he served on the Finance Committee. Col. Cox will be honored with a service at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC 29229 on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive friends after the service at the Cedar Cove Clubhouse at 100 Willowood Parkway, Chapin, S.C.
