Jean Whitacre Cottrell - LEXINGTON - A memorial service celebrating the life of Jean W. Cottrell, 70, of Lexington, will be held at 5:00 PM, Thursday, April 27, 2017, at Lexington Church of Christ, 101 Ballpark Road, Lexington, SC 29072. A private interment at Fort Jackson National Cemetery will be held at a later date. Mrs. Cottrell passed away Saturday, April 22, 2017. Born in Tampa FL, she was a daughter of the late Harley Elwood and Gladys Renard Whitacre. Jean graduated from Lipscomb University, and retired as a preschool teacher. She was a member of Lexington Church of Christ. Jean lived with compassion and joy that spread to those around her. Her deep devotion to her faith in God was reflected in the love she gave to her husband and two sons. Even as her cancer progressed, she still served others through letter writing and hosting a weekly women's group. She also lovingly provided care for Geoffrey, her adult son with special needs. She leaves behind memories of selflessness, humor, and gentleness. She is survived by her two sons; Geoffrey Cottrell and Preston Cottrell (Alana); brother, Allan Whitacre (Carolyn). In addition to her parents, Jean was predeceased by her husband Gary Dee Cottrell. The family would like to thank Dr. Anne Hutchinson for her loving and attentive care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Lexington Church of Christ.
