Obituary of Lilly Maria Mattle Elam
Lilly Maria Mattle Elam died peacefully in her sleep on January 11, 2017, after a lengthy bout with Alzheimer's. Lilly grew up in Switzerland during World War II and won a prestigious apprenticeship as an accountant for Schlieren Elevators and later served as office manager for an independent manufacturer of belts for industrial products.
Lilly was the daughter of Emil Clemens Mattle and Lilly Binder Mattle of Zurich Switzerland. She was predeceased by husband Joseph D. Elam of Spartanburg and survived by her two sons, James Thomas Elam (Katherine) of Raleigh, NC, and Robert Joseph Elam (Melissa) of Irmo, SC. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Lauren Flowers (Patrick Flowers), Rebecca Elam, Abby Elam, and Joseph Elam; her great grandson, Austin Flowers; and her brother Emil Mattle (Heidi) of Switzerland.
Lilly was a devoted homemaker, and she also served as a legal secretary and H&R Block tax preparer in Myrtle Beach. She was extremely gifted artistically, helping family, friends and neighbors in numerous creative endeavors. She was an avid bridge player and member of the Hi Newcomers Club, welcoming families to Myrtle Beach.
Memorial services will be held in Myrtle Beach, SC, at a date and time to be announced.
