A memorial service for Frankie Funchess, 72, of Columbia, will be held at 3:00 PM, Monday, August 22, 2016 at Suber-Marshall Memorial United Methodist Church, 3900 Suber Street, Columbia, SC 29205. The family will greet friends following the service at the church. Woodridge Funeral Home of Lexington is assisting the family. Frankie passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2016 following a long and courageous battle with respiratory problems. Born in West Columbia, she was a daughter of the late L.B. and Emily Poe Grubbs. She was a 1963 graduate of University High School in Columbia. Devoted to her church, family and friends, Frankie also enjoyed collecting cats - figurines and lively "fur children". Known by several nick names, Frankie, Sis, Tookie, Boo shared her spirit genuinely with whomever she met. As a serious bargain-hunting shopper, she delighted in finding items to surprise and amuse those she knew. Reaching beyond familiar faces, she helped folks she had never met. For example, she was part of an effort to provide Christmas stockings, Easter baskets and school back packs for at-risk children for 16 years. Blessed with a warm heart and quick wit, she left us with a legacy of love that we are challenged to continue. She is survived by her devoted husband of 53 years, Louie Funchess; children, son, Marty Funchess (Angie); daughter, Christie Funchess; grandchildren, Gable and Alex Funchess; Athens Case; siblings, Heyward Holton (Cara), Pam Dawes (Joe); sister-in-law, Rita Grubbs; and many more relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers, Sam Grubbs and Danny Holton. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the 8th floor and 2nd floor IICU staff at Palmetto Baptist Hospital for their balance of compassion and professionalism; their tender treatment of Frankie was of immeasurable comfort to the family. Special thanks to nurses Zakiya and Melissa, who will always be in our hearts. Doctors Edgar DesChamps and Dan Love saw her kindly through the worst of it. For their love of her and her family, we will always be grateful. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made, in her name, to her church home, Suber-Marshall Memorial United Methodist Church.
