Obituary of James M. Smith

James M. Smith. Jr., 62, of Columbia, died Wednesday, May 18, 2016. Born November 5, 1953 to James and Ella Ruth Smith at Valley Forge Army Hospital during a snow blizzard, he was given the nickname of "Frosty" by his Dad and army buddies. James was baptized in June 1966 and became a member of The Firm Hope Baptist Church in Philadelphia, PA, where he was an active member with all the church choirs, youth activities, Sunday School, etc. He graduated from Jules E. Mastbaum Tech High School in June 1971. He married his childhood sweetheart Donna (Penny) in June 1973 and three children were born of their union, James III, Monique and Shannon. He joined the US Army in August 1978 and retired September 1998. Mr. Smith worked as a Din. Fac. Mgr. on Fort Jackson from September 1998 to May 2007, feeding soldiers during their basic training. He became a member of The Greater St. Luke Baptist Church of Columbia, SC in November 2007, working with the Food Service Ministry. Mr. Smith, or "Smitty", as he was called by people who knew him, was the type of person that if he did something, he did it from the heart and because he wanted to do it, and looked for nothing in return. He leaves behind his wife Donna (Penny); Two sons, James III and Shannon; One daughter, Monique; mother, Ella Ruth Smith; two brothers, Climmie and Clarence; three sisters, Elfreada, Emma Lee and Ruby; Daughter-in-Law, Angela Smith; four granddaughters, Amani, Jayla, Brooklyn and Sierra; five nephews, Jerry, Clarence Jr., Eddie, Kayll and Kallean; three nieces, Jeannett, Janen and June; various relatives, in-laws; three dear (best) friends, Frazier Eubanks, Kathy Brown and Alvida Jenkins; neighbors and loved one's. A memorial service will be held at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, at The Greater St. Luke Baptist Church of Columbia, SC.
