I just saw this notice of Mr. Hand's passing and wanted to pass along a "connection" that I have with Mr. Hand. I noticed the reference to him being well known for playing drums at Wofford. When I was a teenager back in the 70s (303 Second Street!), I bought a set of white pearl WFLudwig drums from Mr. Hand. I remember him telling me they were made in 1949. I played those drums for years, including 4 years with the "Sweet Spirit" Christian group there in Bamberg. I was playing those drums at Mt Zion Baptist Church in St. George in 1976 when I met my future wife. We've been married 38 years! I think of Mr. Hand every time I pass "my" drum set! Thank you Mr. Hand!

Jim and I just saw the notice of Joel's home going. He was a gifted photographer, capturing our wedding in 1982, giving us wonderful memories of that event, and now many years later, I have wonderful photos of my parents and Jim's mother.
Recently, Jim looked at our photo album and decided to have my wedding profile, which at that time was an unusual pose, reproduced on canvas. It is now a treasure to us and graces our piano, even after I have lost a bit of the glow of my youth!
Joel once encouraged me to reproduce a photo I had done of the aged lion at Columbia Zoo, which I did. He told me, "you must sign your work." I have recently begun to do artwork and I often recall his words. I sign my paintings just as he said.
Our condolences go out to your extended family as I know how much you will miss him.
Heaven will be a wonderful reunion for all of us one day.

I never met a better person than Joel. I worked with him for over twenty years and enjoyed ever interaction with him. He was truly a Southern Gentleman. He will be missed by many DHEC Friends. Good Bye My Friend
