Obituary of Queenie Martindale

Queen Esther “Queenie” Martindale – A Celebration of Life service for Queen Esther “Queenie” Martindale, 90, of Columbia, will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, March 21, 2021 at Elmwood Avenue Church of God, 1427 Elmwood Avenue, Columbia, SC 29201. Pastor Jay Brunson will officiate. Burial will follow the service in Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens. The family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service in the church sanctuary. Woodridge Funeral Home of Lexington is assisting the family with arrangements.

Queenie Martindale passed away peacefully at her home March 15, 2021. Born in Maxton, NC, she was a daughter of the late Rowland Chavis and Lillian Goins Chavis. Queen Esther Chavis Martindale was a devout, God-fearing person all her life, who loved her family with all her heart. She was the wife of John Harvey Martindale for forty-six years (1950-1996). After her husband, her children were the pride, joy, and love of her life to her last days. She was the heart and soul of her house all her life.

Queenie was a multi-talented woman who was a self-taught seamstress, cook, homemaker, and just about anything else she put her hand to. She was always active and involved in her children and grandchildren’s lives. Being an active member of the Church of God all her life helped sustain her life-long active, vibrant faith in God and His Son. Queenie was a long-time member of Elmwood Avenue Church of God. She was one of 18 children in her family.

Queenie is survived by her sons, John H. Martindale, Jr. (Evelyn) of Calhoun, GA, David W. Martindale of Columbia; daughter, Donna G. Roof of Columbia; son, Keith D. Martindale (Michelle) of Lyman, SC; daughter, Lisa R. Busbee (Len) of Colorado; son, Phillip A. Martindale of Columbia; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Queenie was predeceased by her loving husband of 46 years, John H. Martindale; daughter, Theresa L. Darnell.
