Obituary of Phillip Turner Harpine

Leesville - Mr. Phillip Turner Harpine Jr., 87, died Monday, June 15, 2015 after an extended illness. He was born in Washington, D.C. on July 25, 1927. He was the only child of the late Phillip Turner Harpine and Kate Beam Harpine of Virginia. Phillip Turner Harpine (Phil) retired from the State of South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) at the age of 62. Phil also served in the United States Army during World War II as a Security and Communications Specialist in the "Constabulary" stationed in Germany. Phil has been a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church since 1975, with current membership at the Three Angels Adventist Church Group in Batesburg/Leesville, SC. Phil served as an Elder at the Three Angels Adventist Church Group since inception as a "New Church Plant". Phil and his wife Sandra (Sandy) served at the 1st SDA Church in Columbia, South Congaree SDA Church (West Columbia SDA Church), at the Aiken SDA Church as well as at the Old Batesburg-Leesville Church in the 1970's. Phil enjoyed golfing with his two sons in previous years. He enjoyed working with his mind and hands building his log cabin home, airplanes and a boat with love of electronics, woodworking and creativity. Phil and Sandy worked with the Ridge Amateur Radio Club for years and with the Red Cross in Damage Assessment after storms and natural disasters. Phil and Sandy were also Captains in the State Guard for over 7 years, long term members of the NRA and Phil held a private pilot's license until recent years. Phil was preceded in death by his first wife Jessica VanEmden, in Scotia, NY. Phil was a loving Christian Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grand Father and blessed friend. Surviving Phil are his wife Sandy, two sons, Gordon (Sue) Harpine of Burnt Hills, NY, and Steven (Suzie) Harpine of Saluda, NC. Three daughters, Louise (Norm) Campbell of Middletown NY, Stephanie Cherne of Santa Fe, NM and Suzanne (Stephen) Boykin of Jackson, TN. In addition, multiple Grand and Great-Grand children throughout the United States. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Evangelistic or Building Fund for the Three Angels Seventh Day Adventist Church Group of Batesburg-Leesville, SC. PO Box 3044, Batesurg-Leesville, SC 29070. Arrangements are being handled by Woodridge Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Lexington, SC. Funeral services will be held at the Woodridge Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel at 12:00 PM on Friday, June 19, 2015, followed by a brief graveside service at 2:00 PM at Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, SC with Pastor Dan Shafer of Virginia officiating. Phillip Turner Harpine will be buried with U.S. Military honors. Loved ones will be asked to leave the Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. for interment of the casket, and may return to visit the grave site if desired, after one hour. Phil will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
