Obituary of Barbara Dean Carter Feagin

Barbara Dean Feagin entered into rest on Saturday, November 16, 2013, after a long illness. Graveside services celebrating her life will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Park at a later date. Barbara was born in Hamburg, Arkansas on May 7, 1937 to Jeff and Lela Carter. At 18 years old, after graduating from Hamburg High School, she moved to Columbia, SC, where she lived out her life. Barbara worked for Johnson Controls for many years and then for the State of SC in the Real Estate Department for many more years until her retirement. Barbara was a kind and loving person who enjoyed life to its fullest. She had many friends and a large family and was always there for them. She enjoyed playing bridge, wine tasting, Broadway shows and the time she spent with her girlfriends shopping and traveling any time the opportunity presented itself. New York, with her girlfriends and Myrtle Beach, with her family and friends, were her favorite vacation spots. She also loved the special time and outings she was able to spend with her grandchildren. Her friends at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Columbia were also important in her life. Barbara was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Charles Adren Feagin. Those left to cherish the beautiful memories of her are a son, James Martin (Marty) Feagin; two grandchildren, Victoria Feagin Johnston and James Martin (Jamie) Feagin Jr, and two great-grandchildren, who she never had the joy of meeting. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Curtis Carter, James Carter, Kenneth Carter and Lawrence Carter. She is survived by her sister, Donnie Craig and husband, Rommy, of Bakersfield, CA; a brother, Raymond Carter of Cottage Grove, OR; five sisters-in-law, Katherine Carter of Bossier City, LA; Tena Carter and Bridgette Carter both of Valdosta, GA and Lydia Claytor and Eleanor Feagin Maher both of Columbia, SC; long time best friend and travel companion, Reba Avant of Columbia, SC; along with many nieces and nephews who she dearly loved. Barbara's family wishes to thank her care givers at the Brian Center for the caring comfort they gave her during the past seven years as she fought a losing battle with Alzheimer's. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Columbia, SC in her name. Donations can be mailed to: Alzheimer's Association of SC, Midlands Area Office; 3223 Sunset Blvd., West Cola., SC 29169.
