Obituary of Virginia S. Merritt

Virginia S. Merritt – Columbia – A Homegoing service for Virginia S. Merritt, 87, of Columbia, will be held at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at the Lakeside Gazebo at Woodridge Memorial Park, 138 Corley Mill Road, Lexington, SC 29072. Pastor Chuck Parker will officiate. The family will greet friends at the Gazebo following the service. Woodridge Funeral Home of Lexington is assisting the family with arrangements.

Virginia Merritt passed away January 13, 2021. Born in Newberry, SC, she was a daughter of the late James Smith and Thelma Louise Wesson Smith. She worked for and retired from Bell South Corporation after a career of 40+ years. Virginia was a member of Lexington Presbyterian Church, and helped coordinate volunteers for the church blood drive each year. She enjoyed reading her Bible, and was loved by her family.

Virginia is survived by her children, son, William A. Merritt (Karta) of Moncks Corner, SC, daughter, Melodie M. Baughman (Sammy) of Lexington; grandchildren, Sam Baughman, Courtney M. Stemple (Luke), William A. Merritt, Jr., (Kim), Lauren B. Amick (Travis); six great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Virginia was predeceased by her sister, Betty Lou Livingston.

The family would like to thank the staff of Prisma Health Richland Hospice, and especially Mallory Wilcox, for their loving and wonderful care of our mother. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
