Obituary of Cathryn June Finucane

OBITUARY – NORTH MYRTLE BEACH – Cathryn June Finucane – Services for Cathryn June Finucane, 73 of Lexington, formerly of North Myrtle Beach, SC, will be private. Woodridge Funeral Home of Lexington is assisting the family with arrangements. Cathryn Finucane passed away at home November 20, 2020. Born in Ripon, WI, she was the daughter of the late Wallace Buchholz and Florence Klappa Buchholz.

Cathryn Finucane was one of the most headstrong and passionate people to ever be a part of our lives. She was a loving wife, caring mother, amazing grandmother, dedicated pet lover, but most of all, someone you could get to know and love.

Cathryn had a love for the game of tennis throughout her life. She was an avid player, while becoming victorious in the levels where she competed. Her teammates valued her not only as a teammate, but also as a friend. While the match might have been over when the score was completed, the time with her friends was not over. She enjoyed spending time having a “wine cooler” with her team, whether it was a win or a loss. After competing, Cathryn enjoyed watching tennis on a regular basis. It was always a “must watch” during the Fourth of July week, wherever we might have been spending the holiday.

Cathryn and her husband John, who survives her, shared 43 years of marriage. They enjoyed traveling with each other, collecting and tasting wines, taking care of their pets, spending time working on their house, and much more. She ensured, at every opportunity, that she and John stayed active and healthy. They enjoyed many laughs together throughout their years. One of the most important parts of their marriage was demonstrating that you stick together, through thick and thin. This inspired their sons and others to cherish these same values.

“One of the most important things I can take away from their marriage is to always take the opportunity to enjoy time away from work and enjoy the opportunities provided. Some of the best photos of my parents are when they were traveling, enjoying themselves, and were living carefree. I will carry their values through my own marriage and life.” – Travis Finucane, son of Cathryn and John Finucane

Her love of her “fur babies” ensured that any animal that lived within her household lived their best life, and were loved each and every day. Countless pets through the years were always there to lay with her to keep her warm and smiling. She made sure that her animals had the best care, and in return, her fur babies loved her unconditionally. She never would have a “favorite” pet, and treated all of her babies equally. Her heart always belonged to her fur babies, whether they were big or small.

As a mother, Cathryn instilled certain values in her sons; they should always treat others as they would want to be treated. She wanted to ensure that the boys she raised turned into gentlemen, who would be respectful and be respected. She was serious more than not, but there were plenty of times, when in the car, she would slap us across the chest just to see if we were paying attention, while she giggled in the driver’s seat.

Cathryn was a homemaker, and provided the best home that any child could ask for. While many people will measure a life based on the materialistic value of the items around them, Cathryn provided, more than anything, value from the heart in the form of love and comfort. If you were having a bad day, she was there to ensure that the next day would be better than the last. She was energetic around her family and kept it light-hearted. She enjoyed spending time with her family, and when everyone was together, she was the most happy. While her sons may have moved out and started lives outside of her house, she made sure that they kept in constant contact, and wanted to hear from them regularly, always trying to set up the next opportunity to see each other in person.

Becoming a grandmother was the pinnacle for Cathryn. Seeing her interact with her grandchildren and play with them was a true vision of happiness, each and every time. She loved to scroll through pictures of her two grandchildren each day, and could not wait to see them again. “Granna” was always more lively with her little ladies around, even when they were pushing her to her limit. She always made sure that she took advantage of any time she had to spend with them.

Through the years, Cathryn touched many lives along her path. While she was taken from us far too early, she ensured that we understood the most important things to her; keeping her family close and never finishing a conversation without an “I love you”. She will be missed each and every day, but will never be forgotten. Cathryn was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and fur baby mother. But most of all, she was an amazing human being.

Cathryn is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, Dr. John Patrick Finucane; sons, Jeremy Finucane of  Keystone, CO, Travis Finucane (Bianca) of Hoffman Estates, IL; grandchildren, Khloe and Farabe Finucane. Cathryn is also survived by her loving four-legged children, Camille, Coco and Wilson.

In addition to her parents, Cathryn was predeceased by her paternal grandmother, Clara Buchholz of Ripon, WI.
