Obituary of Edna Gibson Roberts

A Celebration of Life service for Edna Gibson Roberts, 90, of West Columbia, SC, will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, October 23, 2020 at the Gazebo at Woodridge Memorial Park, 138 Corley Mill Road, Lexington. Her family will greet friends at the Gazebo following her service.

Edna, known to many as Nanny, was received into the loving arms of Jesus on October 20th, 2020. Nanny was born in New York City, to the late John Ansel Gibson and Margaret Mary Franey.

Nanny was married to the late William Morrison Roberts, and together they lived in Easley. They owned and operated Easley Bakery before moving to Columbia in 1982 to be with their daughter and grandchildren. After moving to Columbia, Nanny became a caregiver, not only to her four grandchildren, but to many others in the West Columbia community. She was the matriarch of her family. She loved her Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. She was the definition of unconditional love. Nanny was a true servant.  She always put others’ interests ahead of her own.  Nanny invested her life in caring for others, especially children. There was never a baby that Nanny couldn’t put on her lap and rock to sleep.  Some of us called her “The Baby Whisperer.” She was a true example of someone that cared for others more than herself.   She was a wonderful woman with a heart for others, and we can all learn from her example.

Nanny was a member of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, and an avid viewer of the televised services of First Baptist Church of Columbia in her later years.  When she passed, she had 13 great grandchildren, who all loved her, and all felt loved by her.

Nanny is survived by her four grandchildren, William Jesse Eudy (Brittany) of Blythewood, and their children, Caroline and Oliver; Lauren Eudy Hudgens (Greg) of Columbia, and their children, Reese, Ward, Gibson and Anderson; Mary Beth Eudy (Jerad Dunlap) of West Columbia, and their children, Dylan, Emma, Lena and Eli; Allison Eudy Campbell (Rhett) of West Columbia, and their children, Wade, Maggie and John. Nanny is also survived by many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Nanny was predeceased by her daughter, Theresa Roberts Eudy; sister, Anna Mary Jordan; brother, Johnny Gibson.

Nanny’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Compassionate Care Hospice for their tender care, and her caregiver, Danielle, for her loving care over the past few months. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jesse Eudy Memorial Charity Golf Classic at P.O. Box 2135, West Columbia, SC 29171.

Her family asks that those who attend her service comply with social distancing regulations and wear a mask for the protection of all who cared for her.
