Obituary of Juanita Tuck Yancey

Juanita Tuck Yancey, 86, of Columbia, SC, passed away on April 5, 2023, after months of treatment in her courageous battle against cancer.

Juanita was born and raised in Virginia, and called South Boston, VA, home. She graduated from Halifax County High School, where she was very active. Juanita loved living in Creedmoor, NC and enjoyed some time living in Springfield, IL. For the last forty years she lived in Columbia, SC. Juanita was married to the love of her life John “Buddy” Yancey, Jr., for more than fifty years. Together, they traveled to many places in the world, and raised a family built on faith and love.

Juanita was a member of Riverland Hills Baptist Church since 1970.  She was a member of the choir for many years, and the Secretary of her Sunday School Friendship Class. Juanita was a retired stay-at-home Mom and was also a stay-at-home Grandmother, part-time artist, and ”Jack- of-all-trades”.

As an artist, Juanita really studied life around her; the flowers, trees, sunrise, sunset, little babies’ smiles, things we take for granted every day.  This mindset made her truly aware of God’s beautiful creations. She once said, “The more I looked at things, great and small, the more I realized that God is the Greatest Artist!  We should thank God daily, for all of His blessings and miracles.”  This is so evident in the miracle of the birth of his son, Jesus, which we celebrate this time each year.  This miracle, along with all the other miracles God performed, should keep us looking at the beauty that God has to offer.  We need to make a conscious effort to slow down and enjoy life.

Juanita has been a part of the SC Watermedia Society; International Society of Experimental Artists; Trenholm Artists Guild; Seven Oaks Art League; Southern Watercolor Society; Crooked Creek Art Guild. She served as board member in several art organizations. She was well known throughout the art community statewide. She was a very giving artist, willing to share her unique talents with many. She has won numerous awards throughout her art career. She worked with the art exhibits with the SC State Fair for years upon years where she built great friendships.

Juanita is survived by her three children: Sharon Yancey White (James), David Yancey (Barbara), and Laura Yancey-Jones. “Nene” has six grandchildren: Jonathan White (Meg), Zachary White (Jennifer), Justin Yancey (Jael), Liz McCarthy (Chas), Ashlei Wilson (Judd), Evan Yancey-Jones. She has six great-grandchildren: Madelyn White, Louisa White, Elena White, Callum White, Charlotte McCarthy, and Whitaker McCarthy.

Juanita was predeceased by her parents, Woody and Luby Tuck of Virginia; her siblings, Nell Tuck Nichols, Barbara Tuck Russell, Marshall Tuck, and son-in-law, Doug Jones. She will rejoice when she is reunited in Heaven with her loving husband, John A. Yancey, Jr. who died in 2011.
