Shirley Steenbergen

Obituary of Shirley L Steenbergen

Shirley Steenbergen, 81, of Columbia, South Carolina, passed away on March 20th, 2023, following a brief illness. Shirley was born January 7th, 1942, to Peggy Rheeling in Buffalo, NY. Shirley married Thomas Brennan and together they had six children; Timothy, Susan, Patricia, Karen, Beth, and Mark. In 1994, Shirley married the love of her life, Mr. Jack Steenbergen. They spent many happy years together up until his passing.

Shirley was a very caring person with so much love and wisdom to give, which made her a wonderful caregiver to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Shirley would always lend a helping hand and was a very active member in her beloved church Virginia Wingard Memorial UMC. Shirley made sure to create priceless memories with each and every member of her family by sharing laughs, making crafts and baking (amazingly delicious) treats together.

Shirley will live on in not just her children, Beth Mullins (Wayne), Tim Brennan (Cindy), but her grandchildren as well; Adam Brennan, Lawson Mullins (Jessica), Amber Powell (Brandon), Haley Hall (Austin), Kasey Brennan, Ashley Brennan, and Anna Mullins (Kierston); and her great grandchildren, Emmy Hall, Sawyer Powell, Ellie Hall, Hadley Mullins, and Mason Brennan, as well as many special nieces & nephews; Kevin Ushman (Tina), Chuck Ushman (Lucy), David Ushman, Tracy Abel (Rob). She loved her great nieces and nephews too.

Do remember Shirley will live on through many of us in different ways; she was a remarkable person who impacted many people whether you were related, a fellow church member, a dear friend, or a neighbor.

Shirley was predeceased by her sisters, Christine Bennett, Frances Botham; her loving husband, Jack Steenbergen; her children, Susan Brennan, Karen Brennan, Mark Brennan, and Patricia Faltin.

Shirley was always one to spread her love and compassion. Do the same and join us to celebrate her life that she ensured was full of joy at Virginia Wingard Memorial United Methodist Church on March 26th, 2023. The family will receive friends and family from 1:00 – 2:00 in the Welcome Center, and the services will begin at 2:00 PM in the Sanctuary.
