My deepest sympathy to the entire Valvano family.
Blanche made me feel like I was an amazing person and after hearing all the testimonies about her I realize she had a very special gift of making you feel special. I know she genuinely had a heart of gold and wanted only the best for everyone she met. I miss her.

6.5 years ago, my wife and I discussed our plan to help our aging parents finish well. We knew it was time to move them in to our home and love and support them. We also knew exactly the character of the 3 souls we were about to share our home with.
One, Richard, has been the Scheduler / Planner , faithfully gathering people together and getting the much needed work completed.
Next, Jocelyn, was the Anchor who, unwavering, found a way to bring all of the some times overwhelming, scheduling and planning of Richard’s to life. While the Anchors miracles were scaled down a bit, the stories remind me of Jesus feeding thousands with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish.
And then the ONE, my Mom, was without a doubt the fighter, while gritty at times, laser focused at times, loving and faithful always, wanted always to bring everyone to know one another deeply, and experience life with one another, to know God and walk together in His truth and love.
She started her faith filled battle right out of the gate, growing up in a rough foster care system in Philly, she always found a way to shine through the muck, but not just for herself , but with as many as she could bring through it with her. At such a young age, Mom was the pillar of strength for her 2 older sisters and all the other orphaned kids with her.
There were many stories of her sisters crying and scared due to the repercussions of their desperate situation, with Mom grabbing them by the hands and telling them there is no need to cry, that they will all, not only get through the tough years, BUT THEY WOULD ALL THRIVE once they were old enough to leave foster care.
Leaving Foster care in 1948, in Philadelphia, PA, happened when the foster kids turned 16. MOM WAS MORE THAN READY.
At 16 she was out on her own, fighting for a foundation and a bright future.
Without a doubt, it was God’s GENTLE, AND PROBABLY much needed FORCEFUL nudging, that Mom found her way, to rent a room at the home of Tom and Virginia Navaretta.
These two amazing souls took her in, and cared for her as one of their own, They became her “unofficial parents”. They were and will always be, for my brothers and I , our grandpa and grandma Netta.
She also continued to grow her faith in Jesus through the Love and support from my Grampa and grandma Netta.
She soon got a job as a Key Punch Card operator. These key punch cards were pre floppy disc programs cards. Not surprising @ 16-17 years old, Mom started her career as a computer programmer.
In her late teens and into her twenties , she would often attend dances, that the local churches in NY held for many young adults IN THE COMMUNITY.
These church dances are where God led her to meet a young man, Michael Valvano, who quickly became her dance partner , and then , her CONSTANT dance partner!
When she turned 25 and Mike 24, ….they married , with Grandpa and Grandma Netta, by their side.
Over their entire marriage,
She fought to help him to be the best man he could be, as well as, fighting to raise 3 boys with everything that she didn’t have as a child.
She continued her fight over the years and started working a full time job, as a key punch programmer, on top of her already having 2 full time jobs of being a wife and mother, to help nourish this family dream she had.
Almost 30 years later, In 1986,
She made the decision to get out of the rat race of New York, and moved to SC, with Dad and I, FOR A MORE RELAXED NEXT SEASON IN THEIR LIVES, and to be closer to her sisters.
She soon found her church home in Lexington, SC @ Corpus Christi Catholic Church and met one of her closest friends, the Pastor of Corpus Christi, Father Robert Sayer , WHO WE quickly came to know and love, as Father Bob.
They quickly became thick as thieves in their fight to bring the church parish together to do God’s work.
She would spend the next 10 years helping the less fortunate through an organization called Lexington Interfaith Community Service ,that her and Father Bob helped organize the inclusion of Corpus Christi Church.
13 years later,
In 1999, She then started her long next fight, to care for her ailing husband, who had severe Alzheimers, and spent 2.5 years , with many exhausting sleepless days and nights, caring for his every need so that he could finish well, at home.
After Dad’s passing,
She then continued her and Father Bob’s crusade for another 11 years together , side by side.
In 2016,
Health circumstances, that then brought her to the time in her life, when she needed to be cared for, due to serious repetitive bouts of Pneumonia.
Lori and I , with Mom ’s slightly stubborn defiance, Mom “agreed" it was the right thing to move in with us.
She fought for her autonomy and desire to continue to live life as full as possible. She daily and faithfully studied God’s word.
Just 3-4 weeks ago from today, she purchased new art supplies to continue her creative work and passion.
Over the next two weeks, clear signs of her aging body starting to shut down, she began her final stage of her life.
Then, this past Thursday, fighting for every breath, she listened to the calming voices of her loved ones, as we laid our hands on her, that IT WAS MORE THAN OK, THAT she indeed was ready to return home to JESUS, KNOWING FULL WELL SHE HAS ALWAYS BEEN A STRONG AND FAITHFUL FIGHTING SERVANT OF THE LORD.
This verse was one of the last devotions that Mom studied, AND i firmly believe God sent DIRECTLY to her:
2 Timothy 4:7-8
“ I have fought the good fight, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award me on that day- and not only me, but also to all who have longed for His appearing.
2 Timothy 4:7-8
Mom, thru your LOVING, persistent, guidance and example, I finally get it. Your fight will continue on through me and all the wonderful souls you have touched. And we will LIVE LIFE, LIKE GOD INTENDED.
I WILL SEE YOU AGAIN SOON MOM, and what A GLORIOUS DAY THAT WILL BE!
I have and ALWAYS WILL love you , faithfully.

Your mother was a special person. She taught me how to tie my shoes and now that I’m a grandfather I tell my grandchildren about her and the way she taught me . Make two bunny ears and cross them. May she Rest In Peace. Michael Mastrangelo

I will miss our chats and the laughter and joy we shared about everything, marriage, friends, life's up's and down's, loss, loved ones the things we accomplished and the things we both still wanted to do and most of all the deep faith we both share. You made me laugh on days i wanted to cry and held my hand on the days i did cry. The house is already quieter without you and I know that Heaven got a little louder. By marriage you became my mother in-law but you were more than that, you became my friend!
I will miss you so very much until one day I see you again.
PS Are you and my mom in Heaven washing dishes and laughing to irritate me?
