I have many many fond memories of Charles Paschal. He was a grade ahead of me at our small 12 grade school in Biscoe . I am not surprised that one of his passions was serving others. Such a good intelligent humorous person. My sympathy goes out to his family and to those who cherished him. Merry Burt Welker

To Geanie and the Family. I met Charlie Paschal in 1959 when we were both members of the Freshman Class at Lees-McRae Junior College in Banner Elk, NC. We were both assigned to the New Reid Freshman Dormitory. We all knew John Charles by his nickname of “Pepsi”. He was an intelligent and fun-loving young fellow, a good student, and a good influence on the campus. He loved to write and always expressed his desire to become a journalist. In 1961, after graduating from Lees-McRae, we both entered the Junior Class at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. After UNC, I lost track of Pepsi and the Lees-McRae Alumni Office was unable to locate him also.
In 2015, after several years of wondering about the whereabouts of Pepsi, I ventured to his hometown of Biscoe NC to ask around. I found a fellow who remembered Pepsi as a kid. He explained the origin of the nickname “Pepsi”. He said that Biscoe had a Coca Cola bottling plant where lots of local folks worked. Everyone in Biscoe drank “Cokes”…except for one kid…Charlie Paschal…who always drank Pepsi Cola. So, the townspeople nicknamed him “Pepsi”. With some new information from this fellow, I continued my search for Pepsi. I tracked him through a variety of newspaper offices in the southeast and finally found him in Lexington, SC. The very next time I visited southeast USA, my wife and I drove to Lexington and had a great reunion with Pepsi and his lovely wife Geanie.
I had hoped to get Pepsi to attend the next LMC Class of ’61 reunion but, alas, recent reunion plans have been knocked out by COVID issues.
I feel fortunate to have been good friends with Pepsi. And, I’ve always respected his intellect and his dedication to his lifelong quest for journalistic excellence. I will never forget him.
Tom Francis, LMC Class of '61

To the family , I am sorry for your loss. I hadent been in touch for a few years with charlie but I would run into him from time to time. charlie came to rescue an uncountable number of times with his great expertise being in the computer field and on one occasion when I needed an system reimaged back about 10 years ago also taught me a few tricks over the years as well. I was along side of charlie for a few years when we had attended the same church along with 3 or 4 others on the video projection system. charlie will be greatly missed.
