Obituary of Gary Mark Mitchell

Gary Mark Mitchell, 67, of Columbia, South Carolina passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, July 3, 2018. He was born on November 21, 1950 in Charlotte, North Carolina to the late Roy and Bonnie Mitchell. Gary was a 1968 graduate of AC Flora High School and a 1972 graduate of Clemson University. After graduation he worked for a short time with the Pepsi Corporation before opening Contempo Fashions at Lourie’s. Gary closed the business after many years and ventured into the mortgage banking business.  He was Consumer Operaton POD Manager at TD Bank until his passing. When Gary was not working, he was passionate about tennis, sports and his Clemson Tigers. He most enjoyed time with his family, and the times that they spent together were cherished. He will be missed by those he loved and those that loved him.

Gary is survived by his college sweetheart and wife of 45 years, Jan Schiesser Mitchell; daughter, Ryan Spencer; son, David Mitchell (Helen). He was a loving Papa to Cade and Peyton Spencer and was looking forward to the birth of his third grandchild in November. He is also survived by his sisters: Ande Jackson, Jill Bramblett (Roger); Mother-in-law, Florence Schiesser; sisters-in-law, Jill Atkinson (Tom), Cathy Jansen (George); brothers-in-law, Robert Schiesser (Ellen) and Bernie Griffin. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and friends to cherish his memory.

A private service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Clemson University Foundation for the Student Emergency Fund in memory of Gary Mitchell, 110 Daniel Drive, Clemson, SC 29631.
