Jack G. Steenbergen, 83, a native of Ironton, OH, passed away July 7, 2011. He was born in Ironton, September 13, 1927, relocated to Columbia more than 30 years ago, and found new joy and learned more ways to help and love all of God's creatures. Jack was the true definition of what a good man was. He loved visits from his children and grandchildren, and all his friends from Virginia Wingard Memorial United Methodist Church where he was a member for more than 20 years. He always loved a good joke and to make those around him smile. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, of 17 years; brother, Bob Steenbergen of Ashland, KY; his sister, Mary Balof of East Peoria, IL; his children, Dirk and Ruth Steenbergen of Valley, AL, Jack and Vanessa Steenbergen, Ron Steenbergen of Cincinnati, OH, Timothy Brennan of Augusta, GA, Beth and Wayne Mullins of Pelion, Karen Brennan and Tricia Faltin, both of Leesville, Mark and Billie Brennan of Columbia; 24 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and his faithful dob, Bubba. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Eubert Higgins Steenbergen and Moncey Stapleton. Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Virginia Wingard Memorial United Methodist Church. The family will receive visitors immediately following the service in the Welcome Center. The family has asked, in lieu of flowers, please make donations to Virginia Wingard Memorial Church for the Pastor's Discretionary Fund. Jack was a shining beacon to all who met him. He was a wonderful husband, father and friend to everyone who blessed his life. He will truly be missed.
