Obituary of Carter Herbert Morford

Carter H. Morford, age 53, of West Columbia, died unexpectedly Wednesday, July 27, 2011. Mr. Morford was born September 9, 1957, in St. Petersburg, Florida, but has lived in the West Columbia area most of his adult life. He was active in the Boy Scouts and achieved Eagle Scout as a teenager. He graduated with honors from Airport High School and attended Presbyterian College and Francis Marion College, graduating from the University of South Carolina with a masters degree in teaching and a BA in chemistry and history, and was currently working towards his Ph.D in Educational Research. He was a chemistry teacher at Orangeburg-Wilkerson High School and had also taught chemistry at Airport High School. He is survived by his father, William (Gwen) Morford, of Seneca; his brother, Scott (Dorene) Morford, of Greenville; his sister, Margo (Bruce) West, of Lexington; beloved niece and nephews, Philip (Amy) Morford and their children, Eden and Caleb; Laura Morford; Jacob West; Micah (Caitlyn) West; and Matthew West; and very close friends, Alex and Frances Steel and their children, Ann Frances (his godchild), Katherine, and Porter (his godchild), of Huntsville, AL, all of whom will miss him very much. He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Jack and Viola Williams, of Florida, and paternal grandparents, Herbert and Laura Morford, of Maine; and his mother, Jeanie Morford, of Lexington. Donations may be made in his name in honor of his mother, Jeanie Morford, to a breast cancer foundation, such as Susan G. Komen for the Cure, c/o SC Mountains to Midlands Affiliate, 301 Halton Road, Suite D-2, Greenville, SC 29607. A memorial service for close family and friends was held on Sunday.
