Obituary of Alan Paul Rose

Mr. Alan P. Rose Sr. passed away at Lexington Medical Center on August, 23, 2011. He was born March 17, 1931 in Montclair, New Jersey, a son of John F. Rose, Sr. and Irene A. Temple Rose. He grew up in Montclair, New Jersey, where he attended Blair Academy in Blairstown, New Jersey. He graduated from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York in 1952, where he lettered in both football and basketball. He received his degree in Hotel Management. He moved to Cayce, S.C. in 1957 where his Management Company operated the Tremont Inn in Cayce for 38 years. Mr. Rose was very active in the community and his attitude was to give back to the area since he had achieved a great deal from his associations. He was Past President of the Cayce Rotary, West Columbia-Cayce Chamber of Commerce, Columbia Sales & Marketing Association and SC Innkeepers Association. He served on the Board of Directors of the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce, and served as one of the first commissioners for Lexington County on the Riverbanks Zoo. He later served as an original board member of the Riverbanks Zoological Society. He received several awards during his business career such as Ambassador of the Year for the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce, the Service to Mankind Award from the Sertoma Club of Cayce-West Columbia, and the Citizen of the Year for his Distinguished Service to the Cayce-West Columbia Area and the Distinguished Service Award from the Cayce-West Columbia Jaycees. His most rewarding personal contribution was his Annual Crippled Children?s party he gave for 25 years. It was his family background of having been one of six children all of whom had been blessed with good health. He has served for some 20 years as a board member on Christopher Towers, a senior living facility. He was an avid sports fan and was a full scholarship donor of the Gamecock Club for 34 years. He enjoyed playing golf and fishing. Mr. Rose was a member of St. Peter?s Catholic Church since 1959. He served his country in the Army during the Korean War. He was a devoted family man not only to his children but was the best grandfather anyone could have. His outstanding friendly attitude will be missed and his subtle Irish humor will always be remembered by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Billie L. Rose and his children Deborah Ann (Stephen) Marsh of Mt. Pleasant, SC and their children Steven, Christopher and Rebecca, Billie Theresa (Ray) Lorenz and son Derrick Raybon, Alan P. Rose, Jr. and his fiancée Maureen and her daughter, Natasha, and Kevin M. Rose; bothers John F. Rose, Jr. (LiL), Fredrick W. Rose (Judy), sisters Virginia A. Bridges, Elizabeth Jean (Hilbert) Morales, Patricia I. (Peter) Crequet, nephews and nieces and other loving relatives and friends. The Rose family will have a visitation at the home 713 Jansen Avenue in Cayce, SC. It will be held from 4-7pm on Sunday, August 28th. The Cremation Mass Service will be held 11 a.m., Monday, August 29th, of 2011 St. Peter?s Catholic Church, 1529 Assembly Street, Columbia, SC., followed by visitation time in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts to St. Peters Catholic Church, Cardinal Newman School, 4701 Forest Drive, Columbia, SC, 29206, and Christopher Towers, 1805 Devine Street, Columbia, SC, 29201.
