Obituary of Ben R. Moye

Ben Moye was born in Augusta, Georgia, the sixth of eight children, to Edward and Jessie Moye. He graduated from Presbyterian College and earned an M.A in Education from UNC. He served in the Army Air Corps from March, 1944 to April, 1946, as a physical trainer and later as a player for the Super Bombers Football Team. He coached football at Greenwood High School, Presbyterian College and Brookland-Cayce High School. A highlight of his coaching career was as head coach of the 1957 South Carolina Shrine Bowl team. He was instrumental in organizing Little League Baseball in the Cayce/West Columbia area. Ben represented Travelers Insurance Company, also working independently in real estate. He was married to Anne Strunk in 1948 and had four children: Richie, Donnie, Paul, and Cindy Moye; eight grandchildren: Brad, David, Charley, and Brian Moye, Laura Moye Minor, Sarah Moye Brown, Jennifer and Casey Moons; two great-grandchildren: Victoria (Tori) Moye and George Minor. He is survived by one brother Charles I. Moye of Augusta, Georgia. Extended family also include Ralph, B.J. and Marlee Phillips. A Memorial Service to celebrate Ben?s life will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 1 P.M. in Our Savior Lutheran Church 1500 Sunset Boulevard, West Columbia. Visitation will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Brookland-Cayce High School Education Foundation, PO Box 2482, West Columbia SC 29171-2482, or to the Chris Myers Children?s Home through Christ Central Ministries, 560 Meeting Street, West Columbia SC 29169.
