Obituary of Opal Harmes Humphrey

Opal Harmes Humphrey, 91, of Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community, 2 Exum Drive, passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening April 11, 2012 in her home surrounded by her loving family. A memorial service to celebrate Opal?s life will take place on Friday, April 20, 2012 at 11 A.M. in the Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 3200 Trenholm Road Columbia, SC 29204 with Rev. Bradley Smith officiating. Mrs. Humphrey was born in Jasper, Michigan, the daughter if the late John Arthur Harmes and Helen Thielan Harmes. She was a graduate of Adrian, Michigan High School and earned a Bachelor?s degree from Adrian College. Following college graduation she was married to Edwin Leland Humphrey and joined him in Kingsport, Tennessee where he was already established with Tennessee Eastman Company. Shortly thereafter she joined her husband while he served as a flight instructor in both the Eastern and Central Training Command flight schools of the Army Air Corps, during World War II. Since living in Columbia Mrs. Humphrey has been an active member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder and in numerous positions in Presbyterian Women and was honored with a Life Membership from that group. Mrs. Humphrey has also been active in and has held leadership positions in the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Mrs. Humphrey is predeceased by her brother Bruce Arthur Harmes. Survivors include husband Edwin Leland Humphrey; sons Dr. Stephen Harmes Humphrey of Mackinac Island, Michigan, Dr. John Atwell Humphrey of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin; daughter Sarah Helen Humphrey of Tucker, Georgia; grandchildren Kathryn Mae Floyd, John Andrew Humphrey, Elizabeth Humphrey Glenn, William Townsend Humphrey, Stephen Raymond Humphrey and Michael Joseph Humphrey; great grandchildren Campbell Elizabeth Humphrey, James Allen Lester Glenn III, Thomas Andrew Humphrey and William Alexander Leland Glenn. The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the memorial service.
