Obituary of Martha M. Wiens

OBITUARY – Martha M. “Marty” Wiens – Lexington – A Celebration of Life service for Marty Wiens, 87, of Lexington, formerly of Battle Creek, MI, will be held at 2:00 PM, January 9, 2021.  The service will be private.  Woodridge Funeral Home of Lexington is assisting the family with arrangements.

Marty Wiens passed away January 1, 2021.  Born in. Mountain Lake, MN, the youngest of 10 children, she was a daughter of the late Peter P. Tieszen and Anna R. Tieszen. Marty attended Bethel College in St. Paul, MN where she met her husband, Jim. Together they moved to Battle Creek, MI in 1958.  Marty was a very active member of Battle Creek Bible Church, singing in the choir, serving in children’s ministries and involved in Ladies’ Bible studies for almost 50 years. Later she attended Berean Baptist Church in Portage, MI.  She, together with her family, also enjoyed many summers serving in the ministry at Camp Oak Hills in Bemidji, MN.

Marty was a substitute teacher and teacher’s aide for many years before earning her B.S. in Education from Bemidji State University.  She went on to teach 2nd grade for 12 years at Battle Creek Christian School.

Delighting in hospitality, Marty thoroughly enjoyed entertaining people in her home, including students from around the world. She loved meeting and talking to new people and hardly met a stranger. Her friends were dear to her and time spent with them provided her with deep joy.

During her retirement years, Marty, along with her husband, was involved in various forms of ministry and volunteer work, always looking for ways to serve others and the Lord. She was an active auxiliary member with The Gideons, volunteered at JAARS in Waxhaw, NC, tutored children with the HOST program, and drove a blood shuttle for the Red Cross. She was a collector of snowmen, as well as spoons from almost every place to which they traveled.

And how she loved to travel!!  Along with visiting all 50 states, Marty and Jim also went on missions trips to Africa and Spain, and visited family and friends in Italy and Germany.

There was always a song on Marty’s heart.  She loved the hymns, as well as little jingles.

Mostly she loved her Lord, and desired to live her life in such a way as to please and honor Him.

Her husband, Jim, was the love of her life, and they were almost inseparable during her final years.  The senior community where they lived the past 2 ½ years always referred to Marty and Jim as the “cute little couple,” and even named them the King and Queen there this past Valentine’s Day.  Marty deeply loved her children and adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  We will all miss her tremendously.

Marty is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, James A. “Jim” Wiens; son, Ronald Wiens (Kim) of Helena, MT; daughters, Barbara Cochrane (Paul) of Lexington, SC, Patricia Swift (Rick) of Irmo, SC; son-in-law, Daniel Bishop of Battle Creek, MI; grandchildren, Benjamin Bishop (McKenna), Elisabeth Hollingsworth (Taylor), Zachary Wiens (Kat), Courtney Wise (Bradley), Kaitlyn Wiens, Jonathan Cochrane (Alex), Amy Swift, David Cochrane (Dianna), Katy Anderson (Orren), Nathan Swift (Zoe); great-grandchildren, Lila, Hosanna, Banner, Ellia, Mabel, Haven, Blake, Ezra, Jackson, Arlo; expectant great-grandson, Daniel. In addition to her parents, Marty was predeceased by her daughter, Peggy Bishop; grand-daughter, Chelsea Wiens.
