Harriette Fowler passed away November 16, 2020. Born in Ware Shoals, SC October 23, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Clay Fredrick and Eva Sue Griffith. Harriette attained numerous local beauty contest titles beginning with Homecoming Queen of Ware Shoals High School. She often shared stories of her childhood that balanced her relatively poor beginnings with hilariously enthralling anecdotes mainly of her brother, Bucky's escapades. She spoke of the pain she experienced as a little girl, when her father left their home for good, and how she and her mother would occasionally see him on the street. He would come over to them and pick her up, give her a big hug, exchange a few pleasantries and disappear again until their next chance meeting. As a young woman, Harriette moved to Columbia and found employment with the South Carolina Department of Corrections, before retiring as the Administrative Assistant to the Warden.
Her first marriage produced three children, Rick, Tim and Mandy. Her second marriage of 32 years was spent with her loving husband, Larry Fowler. Harriette adored her grandchildren, great-grandchild, and her church family at Riverland Hills Baptist Church.
Harriette is survived by her children; sons, Rick Hammond (Trish) of Spring Hill, TN, Tim Hammond (Claire) of Bowling Green, KY; daughter, Amanda “Mandy” Mills of Irmo, SC; grandchildren, Schuyler Carter, Sean Delaney, Madeline Hammond, Breck Delaney, Elijah Hammond, Liliana Hammond, Christian Hammond, Marlow Delaney, Fallon Delaney; great-grandson, Conway Carter and niece, Terrie Manley .
In addition to her parents, Harriette was predeceased by her husband, Larry Fowler, and her brother, Harry “Bucky” Fredrick.
The family would like to thank Michelle Bellew, April Esterline Gordon and Amanda Martin for their loving care of Harriette over the past few years, and the staff of Abbey Road Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (donors@stjude.org), or the Alzheimer’s Association, 140 Stoneridge Drive, #210, Columbia, SC 29210.
