Obituary of Joyce G. Marksian

Lexington– Joyce G. Marksian – Memorial services for Joyce G. Marksian, 88, of Lexington, SC, will be held at a later date in Michigan. Woodridge Funeral Home of Lexington, SC, is assisting the family with arrangements. Joyce Marksian passed away May 11, 2020. Born in Detroit, MI, she was a daughter of the late Lloyd B. Ponder and Violet Cooper Ponder.

For as long as I can remember, Mom was working. First was the midnight shift at National Bank of Detroit, and while we didn’t appreciate it at the time, I have, after many years of working over night shifts, come to understand her occasional grumpiness. When my parents divorced, Mom found a job that would last her until retirement, as payroll administrator for Hooker Chemical. Mom was an avid traveler, making trips to almost all points in the USA either with her longtime friend Doris, or with her second husband, Al Marksian. These were undoubtedly the happiest years of her life. After Al passed away, Mom moved to South Carolina to be closer to daughter Laura. She spent her remaining years pursuing her passion for reading, her collection of "Gone With the Wind" memorabilia, and presiding over the many family dinners and celebrations; her matriarchal presence, while now gone, will not be forgotten. She battled dementia right up to the end; her feistiness in evidence, she waited until Mother’s Day was over before passing.

Joyce is survived by her children; son, Paul Bennett (Daryl), of Salem, MA; daughter, Laura Mullen (Bob), of Lexington, SC; grandchildren, Jacob Bennett (Charlotte) of New Hampshire, Nate Bennett (Amanda) of Amesbury, MA,  Matthew Storey (Ashleigh) of Lexington, SC, Beth Sinclair (Dan) of Salem, MA; 9 great-grandchildren; brother, Lloyd “Bart” Ponder (Cindy) of Clinton Township, MI; Joyce is also survived by a large and loving extended family. In addition to her parents, Joyce was predeceased by her husband, Al Marksian. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made, in Joyce’s name, to the Alzheimer’s Association of SC,  140 Stoneridge Drive,  #210, Columbia, SC 29210.
