Obituary of Susan Hornsby Hicks

Susan Hornsby Hicks was born in Butler, Georgia, on November 1, 1949, to Harriet Anne Saunders and William Guyton Hornsby.  She passed away on April 2, 2020 in West Columbia, SC, after several years of failing health.

Susan is survived by her husband of 50 years, Marion Lorraine Jeremiah "Jerry" Hicks, Jr.; daughter, Lorraine Hicks Paxton of Piedmont, SC; son, Micah Jeremy Hicks (Ginger) of Franklin, Tennessee; grandchildren, Anna Dell Paxton, Micah William Hicks, Emily Saunders Paxton, Marion Marguerite Hicks, and Oliver James Hicks; father, William Guyton Hornsby; and brother, William Guyton Hornsby, Jr. (Jo Ann).  She was predeceased by her mother, Harriet Hornsby and brother, David Hornsby.

A graduate of Brookland-Cayce High School, Susan graduated from Columbia College with a BA, and earned a Masters degree from Frances Marion University.  Susan’s life calling was education.  She taught English at both the Middle and High School levels, but her real love was Kindergarten, a level that she taught for over 25 years.  When Chesterfield County School District decided to have it’s first District Teacher of the Year in 1990-91, Susan was chosen as the best from all the schools.  Susan retired after teaching at Congaree/Wood Early Childhood Program.

Susan was active in the churches in which she was member; singing in the choir, teaching and working with children, as well as being active in Women’s organizations.  In her last church, Providence Presbyterian Church of West Columbia, Susan was an Elder and served on the Session.

Susan loved her grandchildren and spending time with her family.  Thanksgiving was a favorite time where Mimi would cook the Family Feast.  People describe Susan as a lovely lady who loved to bring smiles to other people.

Due to the Covid-19 limitations, the immediate family gathered for a brief prayer service giving thanks for her time with us.  A memorial service celebrating her life will be held when restrictions have been lifted.
