I first met "Mr. Bobby" a few years back when I was a waitress at Za's on Devine.
He was a regular and always ordered a cup of soup and a Budweiser.
We had many long chats, and I miss him dearly.
What a special man that touched so many lives.
My condolences to his family and friends.
Sending love your direction.

I know Bobby will be missed by his closest friends and family who knew him best. Will never forget a famous camping trip to the Wateree River around 1960 with my father, Bill Brooks, Sr, the boys from Bobby's family, my family, and Dr. Scurry's. First time I'd ever caught catfish from a sunken tire!
Enjoyed thoroughly doing business in life insurance with Bobby. He was one of the very best and most productive agents in the Columbia area.
Many know that he loved the outdoors, but also had a love for opera! He could tell you the story line behind every famous opera, even though they were sung in foreign languages.
Saying goodbye is not easy.

I am so sorry . Des was the most unusual and captivating people I have ever met. You could not help but love the rascal.
I first met him in 1953. We became good friends. Every time I ever saw Bobby I was amused. The last time I saw him, I was amused. I learned many things from Bobby. My most sincere condolences to Daisy, Mary, Bobby and Hunter. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the Desportes family. Mr. Bobby Desportes was such an warm, entertaining and talented person as are his wife and children. We were so lucky they moved into the Lower Richland Community. Garry Wooten

My brother Hunter had a poignant comment on Facebook, about my dad as to how it seems unreal he is gone, and how he'd be missed. I agree w/ my brother.
We called him Paw during the last few decades. When he was mentally and physically healthy (up to about age 86 or 87), he was full of energy (loved to take people fishing, bird watching, etc), sharp witted, generous, devoted to 4 generations of our family (counting his generation), and also devoted to his loyal friends. In fact we were amazed at how so many of his friends made a great effort to include him in lunches, visits, etc, right up to the end. Very touching! I would name them, but will probably forget someone important, so will leave them unnamed. They know who they are.
I would like to add a personal thought (this is just from me, not from my immediate family of R.A. DesPortes). Paw was not inclined to want to talk about God, the Christ, or what is in the Bible. But the true God is merciful (see Luke 23:39-43). We actually heard him sing a little about Jesus in his last months. So maybe he can live again (Acts 24:15), and in a much better world (Revelation 21:3, 4).
So again, as my brother said on Facebook, he will surely be missed. We are glad he was born in the backroom of a house on 103 High Street in Winnsboro, and that he gave us life and loved us for his 92 years! Bobby DesPortes, Jr.

Bobby was from a Giant of a Fairfield County Family. His Mother and Father are Legendary. They made many trips to Pawleys Island and Hobcaw Barony, home of the DesPortes Family kin, Bernard Berauch .
The legendary TipTop Inn at Pawleys was in his wife’s family.

So saddened to hear but I know his mind and body are now free to watch the ducks and birds and be the wild, free and gentle spirit he always was. Genuinely one of a kind who raised a genuinely wonderful, one of a kind family! Thinking of you all. We’ll all miss him!
Love, Boo
