Obituary of Margaret Lide McNinch

Margaret Lide McNinch, 80, of Columbia, SC, went to be with our Lord on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2019.   Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Robert E. Lide and Marguerite (Conway) Andrews Lide.    She is survived by her former husband, Marion O. McNinch of Birmingham, Al.  She is also survived by her children and wives; Owens McNinch( Ann) of Richmond, Va., Robert McNinch (Michel) of Irmo, SC, and Dr. Jesse Elwyn McNinch of  Outer Banks, NC.  She is also survived by six grandchildren; Jessica, Michael, Kathleen, Alasdair, Cullen, and Maggie. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Elizabeth “Betty” Lide McAdams.

Margaret was very passionate about her music. She kept her neighbors in her apartment building awake many nights playing her piano. Margaret had the unique ability to listen to a melody and then play the song.  We all remember many hours of her playing hymns she learned growing up in Trinity Episcopal Church, mixed with some classical tunes and an occasionally lighter tune like “Little Doggy in the Window”.

She also loved her animals.  At Agape Assisted Living Facility, Margaret was known as the “Cat Woman”.  When her son brought her groceries, the number one item on the list was CAT FOOD.  She would rather have gone hungry, than her pet “stray” cats.  Many of the Agape residents would get great pleasure in listening to Margaret “meow” for her cats to come eat in the afternoon.

Margaret was also very proud of her Charleston, South Carolina family heritage.  She was directly related to many prominent South Carolinians, including Robert Conway, Joseph Alston, L. Mendel Rivers and many others, and this was a great source of pride for Margaret.  She enjoyed sharing those family stories that have been passed down for generations.

Her family would like to thank the staff of Agape/Carolina Gardens, and most especially Lucinda and Michelle, for their loving care during her stay. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pets, Incorporated, PO Box 6394, West Columbia, SC 29169, or the animal rescue charity of your choice.
